BMW's Anniversary M-Series Motorcycle: The All New BMW M 1000 RR "50 Years M" (video included)

BMW first offered the “M” package for its S 1000 RR in 2018. The M series moniker is widely known in BMW automotive circles as the symbol for BMW's fastest and sportiest performance models.

In 2020, BMW released its first M-series motorcycle directly from the factory in the form of the M 1000 RR. The M motorcycle took it's cue from the S 1000 RR and threw everything possible at it to make a street legal high performance track racer.

In the press release for the M 1000 RR, BMW states, the M GmbH was founded with the idea of “uniting all BMW motorsport activities under one roof and consolidating the construction of high-performance race cars and race engines.”

1972 was the birth year of BMW Motorsport GmbH, the inaugural words of the former board member, Robert A. Lutz, when BMW M GmbH was founded: “A company is like a person. If he does sports, then he is well-trained, enthusiastic, and highly-capable.” The name may have changed, but what’s inside is just as “highly-capable” as forty years ago.

Six victories in six years at the European Championship: the BMW 3.0 CSL was one of the most successful touring cars between 1973 and 1979. At that time, it was the first car to proudly wear the typical BMW M racing design and was also called the “batmobile” due to is massive tail wing. Three stripes of blue, violet and red on a white background made up the design for an entire racing team for the first time, from the car transporter to the key ring.  To this day, this image still characterizes the look of BMW Motorsport.

The first complete development from BMW M GmbH impressed the masses with its 470 hp racing design. In the series edition, the M1 was the fastest German road vehicle of its time, reaching almost 265 km/h. And it was a real eye-catcher. In 1979, Pop Art legend, Andy Warhol gave the M1 a fast-paced, colorful design and was quoted as saying: “I love the car. It’s better than a work of art.”
